Exiv2

I think the quote from the XMP spec in comment #5 already says it all:

"For applications that need to find external XMP files, look in the same directory for a file with the same name as the main document but with an .xmp extension. (This is called a sidecar XMP file.)"

I don't really agree with the poster of that comment that the name can be interpreted either being with or without suffix. To me, the above sentence wouldn't really make sense if the name would include the suffix (because then you wouldn't be able to find another file that has "the same name as the main document" and still have a different suffix).

I was using Bibble for a while and this one uses image.xmp for standard xmp files and image.jpg.xmp for its own variant of xmp which may contain several sets of metadata for the same source image file (Bibble supports having several versions of the same file which all use the same base file but have different settings. In the Bibble GUI different versions appear as differnet images but they all use the same source image).

(but in what way does the above feature request affect the exiv2 library (or command line tool)? Isn't it up to the application to decide what its naming conventions for the xmp sidecar files are?)

The idea was just that there may be people reading this forum with specific interest and expertise in this area who can advise the digiKam team.

Ah, sorry, I didn't pay attention to what bug tracker it was, I thought it was the one from exiv2...
