Digikam Coding-Sprint 2010

Added by Andreas Huggel about 11 years ago

I've just finished packing for the trip to France to attend the 2010 digiKam Coding Sprint and am quite excited to finally meet in person some of the people I've exchanged so many emails with over the years. It's the first time I'm going for an event like this. It's also been a long time since I last spent several days in a row just on this hobby. Besides gaining a better understanding of application's requirements I'm planning to use the time to re-focus on the roadmap for version 1.0.

RE: Digikam Coding-Sprint 2010 - Added by Andreas Huggel about 11 years ago

So here I am back home now, sitting in front of my laptop at two
in the morning, powered by the jetlag, a glass of French rosé and
the olives I brought back from Aix-en-Provence.

Last weekend I finally met in person some of the people I got to
know thanks to the Exiv2 project. The digiKam team first
evaluated Exiv2 in January 2005, when this project was still a
baby, and a little more than a year later, Gilles implemented the
initial digiKam metadata viewer based on Exiv2. Since then, the
cooperation with digiKam has been very active and most fruitful
and both projects have come a long way in these past five years.

Therefore I was really quite excited to receive an invitation to
join this year's KDE imaging coding sprint in France and more so
when it looked like the dates would finally work out this year.

As most of the contributors, I arrived on Thursday. In the
evening we all met at the Maison des Associations Tavans, where
Gilles was giving a talk about digiKam to a newly formed LUG,
whose members warmly welcomed us.

The actual workshop was from Friday to Sunday at the same
location, which provided a functional and very productive
environment. During the day the atmosphere was focused as the
GSoC students used the time to polish their projects with their
mentors. The timing of the event was perfect for this purpose.

Besides a lot of coding on Exiv2 and many other discussions, I
specifically managed to
- discuss the support of new types of metadata for video files
with Gilles
- analyse an issue with the algorithm to distinguish images with
Marcel and get a first-hand update of the current metadata
process flow in digiKam
- get an intro to the amazing digiKam geotagging features from
Michael
- a glimpse into face detection and the new scripting interface

It was interesting to realize how pronounciation of words becomes
important when you talk to each other face-to-face as opposed to
exchanging emails and how much a bit of gesturing and scribbling
on the black board helps to convey a message. I was impressed
with the GSoC projects, the knowledge and understanding of the
students and the professional attitude of their mentors.

And most certainly, getting to know each other in person will
make future team work easier and more fun.
