I request to Catalan translation
Added by Antoni Bella Pérez about 3 years ago
Hello,
I have collaborated with digiKam (https://www.digikam.org/) translation (GUI and doc, https://l10n.kde.org/stats/gui/trunk-kf5/package/extragear-graphics/ca/) and I would like to make this translation.
I downloaded the source code and I have everything I need. Important: I have not found any information about how to proceed. Where do I send it when it finish?
Regards
Toni

I assume that we are discussing Exiv2 as I know nothing about digiKam.
I don't know how the translation gets done as I've never dealt with this! For Exiv2 v0.26, I know that Thomas handled it. I asked him to do this for Exiv2 v0.27 and he didn't reply.
I think you can add a translation in the po/ directory and update po/CMakeLists.txt - however I know very little about this.

Exiv2, yes... Thank you very much for your response, usefull.
If we can confirm that I can do it, I just have to start and know how to send it (I not have repo write access).

Just post the file here, and I'll take care of it.
The Checklist for releasing Exiv2 is at svn://dev.exiv2.org/svn/team/website/Checklist.txt I didn't write this, although I manage the project. The Checklist says:
Localization ------------ 1 month before the release: Update po/ directory, notify translators 2 weeks before the release: Update po/ directory, remind translators Update po/ directory
Who are the translators? I don't know. Must be part of the Linux Community. When you're done with Catalan, perhaps you'd be interested in taking on the task of notifying the translators. I'll copy Thomas B on this topic as he dealt with this for v0.26.

This is the standard GnuText workflow for translation. I'll update the pot file first and then you are free to generate a po file from it to start/update the Catalan translation. You can then file a pull request at https://github.com/Exiv2/exiv2 to get your translation contributed.

Thanks for speaking up about this, Thomas.
I'll have to investigate the po/ directory for Exiv2 v0.27. I don't think that's been done since v0.26. We introduced some new exceptions (error messages) which will must be translated.
So... Antoni. digiKam probably want the po file for Exiv2 v0.26. When that's ready, please leave it here, or open an issue on https://github.com/exiv2/exiv2 and it'll be dealt with. I'll update the po/ directory for v0.27 RC2 (which I expect to release in mid-November). Perhaps you could deal with that and it will be released in Exiv2 v0.27 RC3 (mid-December). We're aiming for Exiv2 v0.27 GM late 2018.
Thomas: Exiv2 v0.27 has been a challenging project, however Luis and Dan have done most of the work. Luis has rewritten the CMake code and added support for conan to build dependencies. I'm really pleased with how well this works. It works well with Visual Studio 2008 and later. You can download from Exiv2 v0.27 RC1 from http://exiv2.dyndns.org
Thomas and Antoni: Thank You both for being involved. Exiv2 is very useful technology. Thank You both for contributing.

I've looked at the po/
directory in Exiv2 v0.26. Thomas is correct. The master file is po/exiv2.pot
. You copy and edit for Catalan.
Generating po/exiv2.pot
is a fiendish trick of autotools. This will have to be re-engineered for RC2 as our build system is now totally based on CMake. I will deal with this next week and I expect it to be in RC2 in mid-November.
So, Antoni, you should take a two-step approach:
1) Download Exiv2 v0.26 Source and find the file exiv2.pot.
http://exiv2.org/download.html
Copy to catalan-catalan.po (or whatever it should be called) and translate.
Post the file here, or with an issue report at https://github.com/exiv2/exiv2
2) Download Exiv2 v0.27 RC2 Source from http://dyndns.org (after November 15, 2018)
It'll be mostly the same as v0.26 with about 5 new exception messages.
Copy to catalan-catalan.po (or whatever it should be called) and translate.
Post the file here, or with an issue report at https://github.com/exiv2/exiv2

Ok! I'm already working!
I take this opportunity to suggest that you use Transifex to manage Exiv2 translations.
Example: <https://www.transifex.com/freedesktop/fwupd/dashboard/>
It is very easy for translators: five minutes of translation and updating a few chains ...

Thanks. Enthusiasm! That's wonderful.
I'm happy to use any tools to make life easier. Remember that Team Exiv2 has no revenue. Andreas (the founder) paid for an AWS node and domain registration. I purchased a MacMini on which to run the buildserver (Jenkins) and http://exiv2.dyndns.org. The project is being transferred to that machine for v0.27.
There's a lot to do, and I'm glad to say that I'm no longer alone. Luis and Dan have done a lot of wonderful work in the last 18 months.
Have a look at this page and you'll see the "Localisation" is one of 15 sub-projects. Andreas dealt with that in the past, and I was delighted when Thomas dealt with it for v0.26. https://github.com/Exiv2/exiv2/projects

Impresionant!
More Transifex info (for us it's free):

Well, that's an offer we can't refuse!

Toni:
Exiv2 is transitioning from Redmine to GitHub for tracking issues, wiki, project management and so on. So, I've opened an issue: https://github.com/Exiv2/exiv2/issues/527 on GitHub to keep track of this work.
When we release Exiv2 v0.27, Redmine will be set as "Read-Only" and all new work will be in GitHub. We'll keep the Redmine database on-line as there's a huge wealth of project history and discussion.

Toni:
Luis is doing really good work on the Localisation and we discussed adding an API to the library last night. Luis and I often talk together 1-to-1 on Slack. If you email me: robin@clanmills.com, I'll send you an invitation to join our Slack Channel "Exiv2". https://slack.com
We use Slack for information discussion (private one-to-one, or private group discussion). More discussion takes place in public on GitHub.com.

Luis and I will release Exiv2 v0.27 RC2 on Friday 16 November. I attach REAME.md (and exiv2.png) in which I've documented 2.8 Localisation. We can include your translation in the release if it's available.
We plan to release Exiv2 v0.27 RC3 on Friday 7 December (code freeze). We hope there will be no C++ changes between code freeze and Exiv2 v0.27 GM on Friday 28 December.
I hope you'll be able to contribute Catalonian and/or other languages to Exiv2 v0.27. I will not slip the schedule for localisation as we plan 'dot' releases to Exiv2 v0.27 during 2019 and 2020. There will be no new features or substantial C++ changes in a 'dot' release. The 'dot' releases will be security fixes, localisation and documentation updates.
Robin
