Aha, i didn't notice the addition in r2638 since i used the 0.22 tar release, sorry.
So this patch seems obsolete.
Note: mechanically the lenses are indeed different. The old (without "II") from ca. 2007 has a filter size of 72mm, the new (with "II") from 2011 has 62mm filter size. Zoom range is identical. The new one has improved glasses and from my experience seems to be slightly brighter.
By now I don't think that there is any lense related difference in the Exif data for both lenses (id 137).
But i'll try to have a closer look at this, since i have images of both versions.

Interesting info, thanks. Any chance you can attach one image from each of these lenses here?

- File IMG_0517-Sigma-2.JPG added
Here are two images from both lenses with very similar settings.
I have more of them, but I'd prefer to upload the exif data
(is exiv2 -ph sufficient?) only, since the images are large and
upload speed is restricted.
In the meantime i noticed that the MaxAperture value differs
for both lenses, but only for higher FocalLength values.

IMG_0517-Sigma-2.JPG was a wrong one. take IMG_0520-Sigma-2.JPG instead.
(is it possible to delete MG_0517-Sigma-2.JPG?)

Markus, did you mean MinAperture? It's F40 in IMG_0520-Sigma-2.JPG and F38 in IMG_0516.JPG.
I don't see how to reliably differentiate between these lenses, esp. since you mention this aperture difference is only present in some pictures.
Phil,
This discussion and the attached samples may be of interest to you. The Canon makernote support in Exiv2 is not very up-to-date, but maybe you can see a difference with Exiftool.

yes, MinAperture.

What I have done in the past for lenses like this that can't be distinguished is to add "[II]" in brackets to the name. So I think I will change this lens name to "Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM [II]" in the ExifTool list.
