Correct although a bit generic for a bug report.
To some extent this is work in progress; with the new TIFF parser Exiv2 will be able to decode more Exif Makernote tags. On the other hand, exiftool deals with more than just Exif and IPTC metadata. There are no plans at the moment for Exiv2 to become a universal metadata manipulation tool in that sense and support all of these; only XMP is currently on the roadmap (as a bug report).

I've been wondering how you do the syncing: Is that largely a manual effort or have you developed a system to (partially) automate it?
Niels:
It is purely manual. The lens and camera ID tables in both ExifTool and Exiv2 vary to much between the various camera and lens manufacturers to make an easy automated system.
