I just found Exiv2 which might be the tool I need to adjust the created-time on hundreds of photos. I notice that in the man page supplied in the Windows executable download, it mentions many image formats that Exiv2 supports, but this list strangely doesn't seem to contain JPG/JPEG. It does of course work with JPG files. Why aren't they mentioned in the list?

You spotted a bug in the man to html converter that I use to create that man page. Yes, Exiv2 works with JPEGs.
