Creating.exv files apart from Exiv2

Added by Steve Wright over 11 years ago

Is it possible? If so, how would one go about it?

I thought the obvious answer would be to compile xmpsidecar.cpp separately from the rest of the library, then see what options it gave in terms of output. Thinking about it now, I'm almost glad my gcc compiler (Cygwin yes but reinstalled) choked out on my two attempts to do so. My other thoughts on the matter went in somewhat the same direction as those w/re the XP tags -- find an encoder and something to set the hex offsets to the appropriate positions so Exiv2 would know how to import them to file gigglesnort.jpg without errors.

About the exv files themselves: it may interest some to know (referring now to http://dev.exiv2.org/boards/3/topics/350#message-557 ) that the iViewMP/MS Expression Media "garbage data," from the XMP tags deleted under that namespace in version 0.19.1, specifically Catalog Sets and Event, show up below the other metadata when one views an .exv file extracted from a JPEG tagged with either or both. My thinking on that is: if they hex/are hex, they can be deleted as hex; it's just a matter of finding out how without spoiling the image data in a JPEG that "contains" them.
